Benemerito of the Americas

Every March 21st, Mexico celebrates Benito Juarez, Benemerito de las Americas,  the first Mexican president of indigenous (Zapotec) origin.  Orphaned at the age of 3, Benito Juarez ran away from home and walked to the city of Oaxaca, a journey that would eventually see him to the highest political office in Mexico.

This event, presented by Orquesta Northwest and the Ballard Civic Orchestra, is dedicated to all people native to the Americas and their heritage.  From a time before borders, we recognize the ancestors of our neighbors and friends who knew our common land in ancient times, before it was divided into nations and states.

We are welcoming Spring with all of its optimism and presenting a wonderful opportunity for our audience to help provide a full scholarship for an outstanding Native American conductor to our Fourth Annual Cascade Conducting Masterclass with Symphony Tacoma Music Director Sarah Ioannides, instructing.

Featuring:  Trio Guadalavin, Soprano Maria Reyna, Banda Femenil Regional Mujeres de Viento Florido (Oaxacan Indigenous Women’s Orchestra), Mayolo, and Ballard Civic Orchestra musicians.
